About A month ago I visited Minneapolis for the first time with my best friend Caleb. One of several great Deco buildings we encountered was Midtown Exchange, formerly the Sears megastore and warehouse. Like the Sears in Atlanta, where I live, it’s been redeveloped, although along different lines. You can see the building for miles around, since the area is pretty flat and it’s just massive. And the Deco profile is unmissable. Look at that gorgeous, giant scale entrance! Caleb and I visited the half of the ground floor that’s now the Midtown Global Market, which is filled with small international restaurants, food sellers, and retail booths. Everything is independent and looks to be local, entrepreneurial, immigrants, true to the neighborhood, which is very diverse. As for the rest of the massive building, the rest of the lower half appeared to be a community health clinic. I’m not sure if the upstairs is office or retail or both. And there’s a bus transfer station out front so it has great transit access.
