Art deco is known as one of the famous art styles around the world and was started to make its appearance in France from 1925 to 1940s. In other parts of the world, the style represented the modernity as well as the escape from convention. It also enables designers to express local or national meanings and identity through native decorative forms and related subject.
The design of the cityscape and homes of rich people were influenced by this type of art style, even cocktail bars, cinemas, and hotels followed the same style. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the state of the art style in other parts of the world:
Japan The dramatic transformation in Japan was seen during the interwar period. The growth of its big cities, such as Tokyo, encouraged the development of a booming urban culture centered on the cinema, department store, and café.
However, questions of Japan’s cultural identity were argued when the country wanted to balance the orders of tradition and modernity, between West and East. In addition, the reconstruction of its capital after the 1923 earthquake saw the surface of many Art Deco buildings. The impact of the deco was also can be seen in striking ceramic, lacquer, metal, and graphic works in 1920s and 1930s.
Indonesia Indonesia has several buildings that represented the deco style, such as Savoy Homann Hotel which was completed in 1939 and built by Henri Maclaine-Pont, Thomas Karsten, C.P.W Schoemaker, and J. Gerber, Jakarta Kota Station, and The Nederlandsche Handel Maatschappij building which is currently known as Museum Bank Mandiri.
Singapore In Singapore , the art style was able to transform the lives of westernized elite and the urban middle class. It could be seen through the palace of the Parkview square Singapore aka batman building and this Gotham city building completed in 2002.
Australia Many buildings in Australia were constructed based on the art style, such as Yule House, Manchester Unity building, the Century Building, Myer Emporium Mural Hall, Mitchell House, Minerva Theatre, the Dental Hospital of Sydney, ANZAC War Memorial, Archibald Fountain, and so on.
Besides those countries above, many others also have several buildings which were constructed based on Art Deco style. It is a fact that the style had significant effect not only in its country of origin, but also in other parts of the world.
